Self-discovery before diving into career decisions is crucial for their long-term life and career success.

In a standard 1.5 to two hour session I spend well over half of that time deep-diving into my clients (15 to 25 age group) personality, values, interests and aspirations. I consider this to be the most important part of a session. Once this has been agreed upon and understood the career planning part of the session is simple.

Encouraging teenagers and young adults to embark on a journey of Schools, parents, and mentors play a pivotal role in fostering environments that promote self-awareness through activities such as self-reflection, personality assessments, and mentorship programs.

Self-understanding lays the groundwork for informed decision-making and long-term fulfillment in one's career path. Here's why it's crucial to prioritize self-awareness before making career choices:

Clarity in Goals: Understanding oneself means knowing what truly matters, what brings joy, and what aligns with personal values. This clarity serves as a guiding light when exploring career options, helping individuals discern between fleeting interests and genuine passions.

Identification of Strengths and Weaknesses: Each individual possesses a unique set of strengths and weaknesses. Self-awareness enables individuals to identify and leverage their strengths while acknowledging areas for growth. This self-assessment is invaluable in selecting career paths that capitalize on strengths and mitigate weaknesses.

Alignment with Values: A career that aligns with personal values fosters a sense of purpose and fulfilment. By understanding one's core values, individuals can make career choices that resonate with their beliefs, leading to greater satisfaction and motivation in their professional lives.

Exploration with Purpose: Armed with self-awareness, individuals can explore various career paths with intentionality. Instead of blindly pursuing external markers of success, such as prestige or financial gain, they can focus on opportunities that align with their authentic selves, leading to more meaningful and sustainable careers.
